SUMMARY:Spring into History: York and the Lewis and Clark Expedition
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of discovery\, reflection\, and local connection at this special documentary screening. Big Medicine: York Outdoors explores the untold story of York\, the only African American member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Enslaved by Captain William Clark\, York did not choose to be part of this journey\, yet his significant contributions as a hunter\, guide\, caretaker\, and intermediary in interactions with Tribal Nations are chronicled in the journals of Expedition members as well as in accounts from the tribes they met along the way. The Arikara tribe referred to him as Big Medicine for his strength and the color of his skin. \nClick Here to watch a preview of Big Medicine: York Outdoors\, brought to us by Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and NEW Multimedia. \nThis film follows eight educators and environmental stewards as they retrace York’s steps on a four-day river trip along the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. On their journey to revive York’s story\, they explore themes of recreation access for people of color\, and the joy and healing that the outdoors can provide. \nFollowing the 35 minute film screening\, stay for a live Q&A with local historian Julianne Lawrence\, Executive Director of the Two Rivers Heritage Museum. Lawrence will provide additional historical context and answer questions about York’s life\, legacy\, and the expedition’s regional impact. \nThis program is presented in collaboration with the Two Rivers Heritage Museum\, the Downtown Camas Association\, and the Camas Public Library. Come learn about a powerful and often overlooked figure in American history and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse stories that shaped the Pacific Northwest. \nDate: Tuesday\, March 31\nTime: 6:30 to 7:30 PM\nLocation: Camas Public Library\, 625 NE 4th Ave\, upstairs\nFree Event
